Our lives are filled with various seemingly unsolvable problems, and sometimes we choose reluctant compromises.
Recently, I have been deeply impressed by an anime I am following, which tells the story of humans living in a world of demons. They are raised as food, and the place where they are raised is called a farm. To make them more delicious, the farm constantly makes human children learn and exercise, so that when they are eventually shipped out, they become high-end ingredients. Noble demons possess a special constitution that allows them to not eat humans; they consume purely to satisfy their taste. However, if common demons do not eat, they will eventually lose their sanity and turn into monsters.
In such a world, if you were the protagonist, what would you do?
Of course, you would cheat and escape!
What happens after escaping? What should you do? It seems like you can only hide. If you can get a powerful weapon, then you can fight back. It seems there are only these two choices.
However, the protagonist chooses a different path. He hopes to find a way to save both humans and demons. Ultimately, he finds a noble willing to assist, and through sharing blood, common demons can stop consuming humans and will not turn into monsters.
The nobles control the supply of blood, thus establishing a class system and statistics.
To obtain high-quality ingredients, they establish farms.
To quickly obtain high-quality ingredients, they plan to establish new automated farms.
It seems like they can add two more bowls of rice.
Of course, today is not about this, but rather to say that most conflicts have two sides: one is to think from my perspective, and the other is to think from your perspective. I am right, and you are wrong. My motives are pure, while yours are not. Whether in teams, work, viewpoints, or positions, we are opposed to each other, and in all situations, there are only two choices.
Our choices are deeply rooted in certain thought patterns, which are related to our identities. Just as technology finds it hard to understand why products keep modifying their requirements, products also find it hard to understand why technology keeps rewriting. These thought patterns encompass not only our trust and values but also express who we are. Therefore, when the other party evaluates us, we feel that our image has been violated, leading to conflict.
In such cases, we can achieve a third choice through collaboration, which is neither my method nor your method, but our method—a higher perspective to resolve conflicts.
Just like in the previous example, the protagonist's ancestors obtained powerful weapons and chose to fight back, ultimately leading to war. In the long war, both sides suffered heavy losses, and in the end, they drew a line, dividing into two worlds. The descendants of those left in the demon world became the children consumed as ingredients.
When we change our cognition, our behaviors and results will also change accordingly.
When tomatoes were first brought from the Americas to Europe, everyone was afraid of this food and dared not eat it. However, sailors at that time faced the biggest problem of lacking vitamin C, which led to scurvy, and tomatoes are rich in vitamin C. They died due to their mistaken beliefs.
If I can only see myself, then there is only one outcome: I must be right, I must win, and you are wrong, you must lose.
I have made many such mistakes in the past, and even now I continue to make mistakes, and I may do so in the future. I believe everyone has heard the story that a single twig can easily break, but many twigs are not easily broken. If I were an iron rod, a machine could break it with 60,000 PSI; if it were a chrome rod, it would require 70,000 PSI; if it were a nickel rod, it would need 80,000 PSI. We can consider these as different people. If we add them together, would it not be 210,000 PSI? If merged into a single metal rod, it could withstand 210,000 PSI.
But in reality, after merging, it can withstand 300,000 PSI, which is 43% stronger than the sum of the individual metals. This extra 90,000 PSI appears out of nowhere, making jet engines possible, as ordinary metals cannot withstand jet engines.
Gandhi liberated India through non-violent non-cooperation. If he had chosen conflict at that time, what would India be like now?
Of course, whether in the real world with others' choices or in the virtual world of the anime protagonist's choices, these have nothing to do with you. When you only see me and you, why not try to observe from our perspective? There may be a new choice waiting for you.
